PSYCHOLOGY WORKSHOPS

Child Psychology

This workshop looks at child theoretical viewpoints to provide students with a well-balanced view of a child's developmental process from birth through adolescence. Included in this workshop are current studies and research that provide an understanding of the principal topics of child psychology as well as recent trends in socially relevant problem areas. Many of the key concepts will be covered through a mixture of lectures, discussions, interactive activities, individual/pair/group work and presentations and multimedia presentations.

Child Development

This workshop looks at child development from ages 0 to 12 years and gives students a better understanding of child development. It introduces the various aspects of development and details the various stages of development in four key areas; physical, intellectual, emotional and social development. Theories in developmental psychology with reference to cognition, emotion and social interaction are also explored in this module. Many of the key concepts will be covered through a mixture of lectures, discussions, interactive activities, individual/pair/group work and presentations and multimedia presentations.

Developmental Issues in Child Psychology

We will look at theoretical viewpoints to provide students with understanding how atypical patterns of development impact on children's growth toward becoming productive citizens and impact on thinking about how our service systems for children affect this growth process. We also will look at the role of families and to consider how issues related to atypical development become matters of public concern and policy.

Developmental Disorders of Childhood

Because of the seemingly carefree nature of their lives, children have been thought not to suffer from mental and emotional disorders. However, studies have indicated that children do, in fact, suffer from disorders typically thought to occur only in adults. Learning and conduct disorders, substance abuse, conditions such as autism and depression, and suicide are common in our young population. This workshop presents an introduction to the most prevalent clinical phenomena; a survey of treatment methods; an introduction to approaches to preventing psychological disorders and promoting optimal development; and practice applying skills to conceptualizing case studies. There will be an emphasis throughout on services for children and adolescents and the nature of volunteer and professional applied work.

Working with the gifted

The concept of intelligence is one that is greatly misunderstood by many. IQ tests have been synonymous with intelligence in many contexts but as you learn in this module; intelligence is an umbrella term. It refers to many abilities such as the capacities to reason, to plan, to solve problems, to think abstractly, to comprehend ideas, to use language, and to learn. There are several ways to define intelligence. In some cases, intelligence may include traits such as creativity, personality, character, knowledge, or wisdom. However, some psychologists prefer not to include these traits in the definition of intelligence.

Family & Child Counseling

This workshop introduces a framework for understanding the significant contributions of major psychotherapeutic theories and methods to the counseling interaction. Students will learn to develop a critical understanding and appreciation of the main approaches used in counseling and the why and how of their use. Counseling is a process that focuses on enhancing the psychological well-being of the client, such that the client is then able to reach their full potential. This is achieved by the counselor facilitating personal growth, development, and self-understanding in the client, which in turn will empowers the client to adapt more constructive life practices. The counselors work in a problem-solving manner with the particular issue. Counselors work from differing theoretical approaches. For some counselors, the focus is on solving problems here and now, dealing with more immediate, 'here and now' issues. Different counselors will place varying levels of emphasis on behavior, on thinking and/or on emotional aspects. All counselors have the central goal to assist you in increasing your sense of well-being.
