CERTIFICATE IV IN TESOL

INTRODUCTION

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is a rewarding and enjoyable activity, opening doors for employment, travel and friendships all over the world. The Certificate IV in TESOL is a very appropriate means of preparation for this. It is accredited by the National Training Authority in Australia and the certificate is recognised internationally. The Certificate IV in TESOL takes a competency-based approach to training, which ensures that it is clearly focused on the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary for teaching English to speakers of other languages.




COURSE STRUCTURE

To qualify for the Certificate IV in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages – Course Code: 30920QLD) trainees must complete the following:

  • Twelve (12) Core Units
  • One (1) Elective Unit, and,
  • Practice Teaching



Core Units (All units must be completed by all trainees)

Apply approaches and methods in TESOL (Unit Code: QLD244AMT01B)

This unit will evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of various TESOL methodologies. It will teach you how to select and apply appropriate methodologies in response to different learning needs and situations.

Analyse language, culture and learning (Unit Code: QLD244LCL01B)

Through completion of this unit you will be able to understand the relationships between language and culture, language and learning. It addresses the impact these dynamics have on the ESL classroom, and applications within ESL teaching.

Analyse the English language (Unit Code: QLD244AEL01B)

Analyse the English Language gives an understanding of the functional nature of the English language. Study of this unit also provides knowledge on the language choices that are associated with a variety of social or functional purposes.

Design syllabus and plan lessons (Unit Code: QLD244DSP01B)

This unit will enable you to plan and implement a series of lessons for individuals in a group ESL learning environment. It addresses the practical techniques required to plan, deliver and review ESL teaching.

Teach English grammar (Unit Code: QLD244TEG01B)

This unit comprehensively addresses specific aspects of English grammar. You will gain knowledge of the practical techniques required to familiarise ESL students with a variety of grammatical concepts.

Teach Spelling and Pronunciation (Unit Code: QLD244TSP01B)

Through completion of this unit you will be able to understand the sound-spelling relationships in English. You will also learn how to apply techniques required to teach spelling and pronunciation.

Teach Speaking (Unit Code: QLD244TSE01B)

Teach speaking explores the functional nature of spoken language use. You will learn practical techniques required to for developing the spoken English skills of ESL learners.

Teach Listening (Unit Code: QLD244TLE01B)

This unit assist you to understand and apply practical techniques required to develop listening skills and strategies.

Teach Reading (Unit Code: QLD244TRE01B)

Through completion of this unit you will be able to understand and apply the practical techniques for developing the skill to read a range of authentic or published texts.

Teach Writing (Unit Code: QLD244TWE01B)

In the unit teach writing you will undertake analysis of written texts. You will also learn the practical techniques required to plan lessons that will develop writing skills for specific text types.

Assess ESL Learning (Unit Code: QLD244AAEL02B)

Through completion of this unit you will be able to select appropriate assessment methods and develop appropriate assessment tools. You will learn how to apply the practical techniques required to evaluate learning in an ESL context.

Develop resource files (Unit Code: QLD244DRF01B)

Develop resource files will show you how to apply the practical techniques required to organize materials and/or resources around grammar points, topics, levels and communicative functions.




Elective Unit

Teach English for Specific Purposes (Unit Code: QLD245ESP01B)

The unit teach English for Specific Purposes will delve into a variety of specific English language contexts. It addresses the practical techniques required to break down tasks involving language and to identify aspects of language that will need development in order to complete the task successfully.

Practice Teaching Involves

As part of the course, you will take part in a practice teaching experience where you observe an experienced trainer teaching English to speakers of other languages and then actually plan and deliver at least 6 hours of English as a Second Language (ESL) lessons. This is so that you can demonstrate that you have the skills required to put the theory of the course into practice. Your teaching will be observed by a qualified assessor who will be able to provide you with feedback and support to help develop your teaching ability. You will be required to do a minimum of 20 hours practical placement which involves a minimum of 14 hours observation and a minimum of 6 hours practice teaching. At the end of the course, we want you to feel confident in your ability to teach when you enter an ESL classroom.

Blended learning includes face-to-face lectures, classroom discussion, hands-on training activities and teaching practice.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

In order for you to gain entry into the LTI Certificate IV in TESOL Course, you need to have a sound level of ability in written and spoken English. One of the following examples of evidence of English proficiency must be provided prior to enrolment in the course:

  • High School report results from year 12 level English
  • Written documents you have produced
  • Evidence of having completed studies at a tertiary level in English
  • Endorsements from a supervisor in your workplace
  • A result from an endorsed test of English proficiency (with an IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent)
  • Your resume

If you are unable to provide evidence of English proficiency, please contact us to discuss what options are available. You may be asked to complete an entry test or participate in an interview over the phone or face to face.




AWARD

Upon successful completion, participants will be awarded with Certificate IV in TESOL. The Certificate will be awarded by Registered Training Organisation, Language Training Institute.RTO No.: 30173
